Developer pleads guilty to improper handling of asbestos

KANSAS CITY – A developer has pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Air Act.

William M. Threatt Jr., 71, admitted he improperly removed and disposed of asbestos between 2001 and 2006 while overseeing the development of the Citadel Plaza.

Threatt, the former president of the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City, and Anthony Crompton, the corporation’s former real estate director, were charged in 2010 with failing to properly inspect for asbestos inside buildings that were scheduled to be demolished as well as failing to remove a large portion of the asbestos.

Crompton pleaded guilty in October and Threatt pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

A sentencing date has yet to be set for either Threatt or Crompton, but both are facing up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
Asbestos is a mineral found in nature that was previously used in the United States due to its insulating capabilities, durability and strength. However, once it was discovered that asbestos caused several health issues, it was banned in the country. Unfortunately, many people continue to use it or improperly handle it, placing several lives at risk.

Perhaps one of the worst illnesses caused by asbestos is mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs, heart and chest. Mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Unfortunately, despite advances in modern medicine, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

Luckily though, anyone suffering from the disease or who has lost a loved one to mesothelioma has a right to seek legal help. Turn to a mesothelioma lawyer immediately to discuss your options and file a claim.

As an asbestos victim, you may be entitled to thousands, or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care for your pain and suffering. Your mesothelioma attorney will do whatever it takes to ensure you obtain the maximum compensation possible and will also see to it that those responsible for your disease are held accountable for their actions.

Don’t wait another minute and contact a skilled team of mesothelioma lawyers today to get started on your case.

Republican candidates target the EPA

The debate over cutting the federal budget and job creation has put a number of regulatory agencies under fire from 2012 Republican candidates. These candidates believe that regulations stifle job growth.

But many of these agencies such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency were developed to protect American citizens from harm.

One of the primary functions of the EPA is to assure that we have clean air to breathe and clean water to drink. The EPA also protects citizens from hazardous materials that pose a danger to human health like asbestos. Several of the 2012 Republican candidates are in favor of deregulation and the EPA is one agency in their line of sight.

Until the EPA began to regulate the use of asbestos it was commonly used throughout the building and naval industries. As a result, many people contract respiratory diseases caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos including a fatal cancer known as mesothelioma.

Environmental advocates and mesothelioma attorneys have worked very hard to make the public aware of the dangers of asbestos.

No matter what side of the issue a person stands, everyone should agree that any type of cancer is devastating and if steps can be taken to reduce the number of suffers it is wise to take those steps.

Mesothelioma lawyers have helped numerous people receive settlements to pay for their healthcare. Patients of asbestos-related diseases suffer immensely, and mesothelioma attorneys understand this therefore they fight to be certain they are fairly compensated.
