Developer pleads guilty to improper handling of asbestos

KANSAS CITY – A developer has pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Air Act.

William M. Threatt Jr., 71, admitted he improperly removed and disposed of asbestos between 2001 and 2006 while overseeing the development of the Citadel Plaza.

Threatt, the former president of the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City, and Anthony Crompton, the corporation’s former real estate director, were charged in 2010 with failing to properly inspect for asbestos inside buildings that were scheduled to be demolished as well as failing to remove a large portion of the asbestos.

Crompton pleaded guilty in October and Threatt pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

A sentencing date has yet to be set for either Threatt or Crompton, but both are facing up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
Asbestos is a mineral found in nature that was previously used in the United States due to its insulating capabilities, durability and strength. However, once it was discovered that asbestos caused several health issues, it was banned in the country. Unfortunately, many people continue to use it or improperly handle it, placing several lives at risk.

Perhaps one of the worst illnesses caused by asbestos is mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs, heart and chest. Mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Unfortunately, despite advances in modern medicine, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

Luckily though, anyone suffering from the disease or who has lost a loved one to mesothelioma has a right to seek legal help. Turn to a mesothelioma lawyer immediately to discuss your options and file a claim.

As an asbestos victim, you may be entitled to thousands, or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care for your pain and suffering. Your mesothelioma attorney will do whatever it takes to ensure you obtain the maximum compensation possible and will also see to it that those responsible for your disease are held accountable for their actions.

Fremont School District Approves Asbestos Abatement

FREMONT – Fremont City Schools has approved an asbestos abatement procedure, giving the contract for the removal of the harmful mineral to Total Environmental on Tuesday.

The district is in the process of demolishing the Croghan Street middle school building this year, but the asbestos must be completely removed before this can occur.

According to Chris Moore of Touchstone CPM, the contractor for the project, Total Environmental bid $108,665 for the abatement contract.

Moore said the abatement work is scheduled to commence this March and should be completed by May. He explained that during an October 2011 school board meeting, an inspection of the school revealed the plaster area of the auditorium ceiling required removal since it tested positive for asbestos, costing about $100,000. The rest of the plaster tested negative for the mineral.

Asbestos removal is a very delicate process, and only skilled and license asbestos contractors are eligible to remove it. If asbestos is disturbed and becomes airborne, it can be breathed in by victims, leading to several diseases, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest. It can take up to 50 years to manifest, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Although some methods, like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, may improve the patient’s condition, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

However, victims of mesothelioma are entitled to seek legal help. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with this terrible illness, turn to a top mesothelioma lawyer immediately to file a claim. As an asbestos victim, you may be entitled to thousands or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care, and your mesothelioma attorney will stop at nothing until you obtain the full spectrum of benefits you deserve.

Resources to Connect with Mesothelioma Lawyers on Internet Threatened by SOPA

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by the exposure of asbestos, a mineral found in nature. It affects the lungs, heart and chest cavities. Roughly 3,500 new cases of mesothelioma are discovered in the United States alone on a yearly basis, but many more go unnoticed. The disease is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat for several reasons.

For one, mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop, making it hard for victims to associate their disease with their asbestos exposure. Second, symptoms don’t always develop, or are very mild, leading the victim to forsake medical care because they may just not think it’s necessary. Third, by the time symptoms even develop, it is usually too late to treat mesothelioma.

Although the cancer can be fought with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma. Patients may see an improvement in their condition, but there is no way to completely get rid of it.

Fortunately, help is available to mesothelioma victims. Anyone who has been diagnosed with the disease or their loved ones should contact a mesothelioma lawyer immediately. As a victim, you and your loved ones may be entitled to thousands or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care and your mesothelioma attorney will not rest until you do so.

Mesothelioma lawyers also fight to make sure those responsible for your asbestos exposure are held accountable for their negligence. Rest assured that your paralegal will not allow their actions to go unnoticed. Anyone guilty of exposing someone to asbestos without the proper safety gear or without notifying them of the presence of asbestos is liable to pay hefty fines and damages.

Finding a leading mesothelioma attorney is not easy, but with the help of the internet and sites like this, getting connected to a skilled paralegal is simple. Unfortunately, that convenience has been threatened by the SOPA act, a bill that aims to censor the internet. Millions of sites could be taken down for absolutely no legitimate reason, but you can do something to stand up for your rights to both use the internet and find a mesothelioma lawyer. Petition your state legislature and the federal government to stop SOPA and uphold your freedom to use the internet.

Zimbabwe Asbestos Mine to Reopen

Harare, Zimbabwe – An asbestos mine in Zimbabwe is about to be reopened, despite opposition from health advocates around the world.

Shabanie-Mashava Mines, the largest asbestos mines in Zimbabwe, will soon resume operations. The corporation is on the verge of completing a study that will allow the mine to harvest asbestos again, a venture that will be profitable for the country but devastating for the health of millions worldwide.

The mine was once privately owned but is now managed by the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) on behalf of the federal government. It collapsed in 2008, leaving about 3,000 workers jobless. The mine is scheduled to reopen in roughly 90 days.

The mine is believed to be sitting on at least 20 years of reserves of raw asbestos, which proponents say will help “strengthen the construction and manufacturing industries” in the country and around the world. Opponents, however, just see this as a drawback in the fight to ban asbestos worldwide.

Massachusetts high school spends millions on asbestos abatement

A Massachusetts high school is finding that a remodeling project is going to cost a lot more than expected. The project has already exceeded $190 million, with a significant portion of that cost stemming from asbestos abatement.

Newton North High School, located just outside of Boston, is known for being the expensive high school ever built in Massachusetts. The school system spent nearly $14 million for the building’s demolition because of costs involving asbestos removal.

Newton officials discovered the asbestos problem in 2010. The original budget to demolish the school was $7.2 million but the costs nearly doubled once asbestos was found in the building’s exterior walls.

Careful work had to be done to ensure that no asbestos fibers were released into the air. Once asbestos fibers become airborne, they can be breathed in by victims, leading to several diseases like mesothelioma.
