Developer pleads guilty to improper handling of asbestos

KANSAS CITY – A developer has pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Air Act.

William M. Threatt Jr., 71, admitted he improperly removed and disposed of asbestos between 2001 and 2006 while overseeing the development of the Citadel Plaza.

Threatt, the former president of the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City, and Anthony Crompton, the corporation’s former real estate director, were charged in 2010 with failing to properly inspect for asbestos inside buildings that were scheduled to be demolished as well as failing to remove a large portion of the asbestos.

Crompton pleaded guilty in October and Threatt pleaded guilty on Wednesday.

A sentencing date has yet to be set for either Threatt or Crompton, but both are facing up to five years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
Asbestos is a mineral found in nature that was previously used in the United States due to its insulating capabilities, durability and strength. However, once it was discovered that asbestos caused several health issues, it was banned in the country. Unfortunately, many people continue to use it or improperly handle it, placing several lives at risk.

Perhaps one of the worst illnesses caused by asbestos is mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs, heart and chest. Mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Unfortunately, despite advances in modern medicine, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

Luckily though, anyone suffering from the disease or who has lost a loved one to mesothelioma has a right to seek legal help. Turn to a mesothelioma lawyer immediately to discuss your options and file a claim.

U.S. Navy Veterans are a particular concern for the MVC because they represent a large portion of the total number of mesothelioma victims in the country. “Of the 2000 to 3000 US citizens who will be diagnosed with mesothelioma this year, one third will be US Navy Veterans,” explained the organization. “However, our service is not just limited to US Navy Veterans. Israeli study of mice reveals information on mesothelioma

ISRAEL – Recent studies have shown high rates of mesothelioma cases in Israel, especially in Western Galilee, where there is a large amount of asbestos.

The area has been known to use asbestos widely in flooring, roofing and other construction materials. A large portion of the homes in the area are laden with asbestos, leaving residents to be at risk for exposure to the mineral and to develop diseases like mesothelioma cancer.

In a recent study, Dr. Rachel Ben-Shlomo and Dr. Uri Shanas of University of Haifa, tested the correlation between mutative cancers and the heightened presence of asbestos. A separate study had shown that the population of mice in Western Galilee was also suffering from genetic mutations.

“This study clearly indicates that there is a link between the higher levels of asbestos in the environment and the frequency of genetic somatic mutations in the mammals,” said Dr. Ben-Schlomo and Dr. Shanas.

They surmised that if the mice were at such a high level of risk for genetic mutations, humans would also be in danger from the presence of asbestos.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer linked to the exposure of asbestos. Asbestos relatively non-harmful when the mineral is intact, but when the fibers break apart, they can be breathed in by victims, lodging in the lungs and contributing to a slew of diseases like mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities and there is currently no cure for it. Some treatments like surgery, chemotherapy and radiation may help prolong victims’ lives, but sadly, most mesothelioma patients die within two years of being diagnosed.

In the study, Dr. Ben-Schlomo and Dr. Shanas examined the population of two wild mice samples to test the connection between the asbestos fibers and genetic mutations.  The first sample of mice was taken from an area that was near an asbestos products manufacturing plant, where the mineral’s fibers could be found in the air and on surfaces and could be easily inhaled. The second mice population sample came from an area where there was no asbestos detected.

The researchers found the mice that were near the asbestos plant to be significantly genetically altered and were living with obvious physical mutations, while the second sample did not have any genetic mutations.

“These findings teach us that the pollutive, mutagenic asbestos increases somatic mutational frequency, which can in turn heighten the chances of developing cancerous growths.”
