Libby asbestos victims to be compensated

MONTANA – Asbestos victims in Libby, Montana are finally getting the justice they deserve. A $19.5 million settlement has been proposed for asbestos victims involved in the W.R. Grace and Co. bankruptcy case.

The settlement will be used to fund the Libby Medical Program, benefitting those who have developed illnesses from exposure to asbestos at the company’s former vermiculite plant.

W.R. Grace created the Libby Medical Program in 2000, following reports that several people became sick or died after being exposed to asbestos.
Asbestos is a mineral found in nature that was once widely used in construction. Once it was discovered that asbestos contributes to several illnesses, including the deadly mesothelioma cancer, it was banned in the United States.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lungs, heart and chest. It is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat because it can take decades to manifest. Symptoms aren’t always alarming and by the time victims seek help, it is usually too late.

Although there are treatments for mesothelioma, including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, sadly, there is no cure for the cancer.

According to Jon Heberling, the attorney representing the asbestos victims, the proposed settlement ensures that the company will not be able terminate the medical program, which it was previously able to do at any moment.

In addition, Heberling says claimants also will be eligible to receive settlements from the separate Asbestos Personal Injury Trust that will be established as part of W.R. Grace’s bankruptcy reorganization plan.

Researchers discover link between asbestos exposure and mortality rate among textile workers

New research shows that textile workers in North Carolina and South Carolina who have been exposed to asbestos had a significantly greater rate of lung cancer, including mesothelioma.

Asbestos is a mineral that was once popularly used in construction materials and textiles but has been banned from several countries, including the United States, because it contributes to a number of illnesses, like the deadly mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lungs, heart and lining of the chest. It can take up to 50 years to develop, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Although the cancer can be fought with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, there is still no cure for mesothelioma.

In a study published in the January issue of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, researchers monitored the progress of over 6,100 textile workers at four Carolina textile mills that previously manufactured asbestos. The researchers reported elevated death rates from lung cancer among the workers as opposed to the general population.

The researchers, based at the University of Nebraska, Duke University and the University of North Carolina, found that there was a strong correlation between the increased mortality rate from lung cancer and the exposure of asbestos.

The research further shows the dangers of breathing in asbestos fibers.

Fremont School District Approves Asbestos Abatement

FREMONT – Fremont City Schools has approved an asbestos abatement procedure, giving the contract for the removal of the harmful mineral to Total Environmental on Tuesday.

The district is in the process of demolishing the Croghan Street middle school building this year, but the asbestos must be completely removed before this can occur.

According to Chris Moore of Touchstone CPM, the contractor for the project, Total Environmental bid $108,665 for the abatement contract.

Moore said the abatement work is scheduled to commence this March and should be completed by May. He explained that during an October 2011 school board meeting, an inspection of the school revealed the plaster area of the auditorium ceiling required removal since it tested positive for asbestos, costing about $100,000. The rest of the plaster tested negative for the mineral.

Asbestos removal is a very delicate process, and only skilled and license asbestos contractors are eligible to remove it. If asbestos is disturbed and becomes airborne, it can be breathed in by victims, leading to several diseases, including mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest. It can take up to 50 years to manifest, making it extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat. Although some methods, like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, may improve the patient’s condition, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

However, victims of mesothelioma are entitled to seek legal help. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with this terrible illness, turn to a top mesothelioma lawyer immediately to file a claim. As an asbestos victim, you may be entitled to thousands or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care, and your mesothelioma attorney will stop at nothing until you obtain the full spectrum of benefits you deserve.

Mesothelioma lawyers also ensure that those responsible for your illness are held accountable for their negligence. They will look into your employment history to determine where you were exposed to asbestos and make sure those responsible pay for their crimes.

Resources to Connect with Mesothelioma Lawyers on Internet Threatened by SOPA

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by the exposure of asbestos, a mineral found in nature. It affects the lungs, heart and chest cavities. Roughly 3,500 new cases of mesothelioma are discovered in the United States alone on a yearly basis, but many more go unnoticed. The disease is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat for several reasons.

For one, mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to develop, making it hard for victims to associate their disease with their asbestos exposure. Second, symptoms don’t always develop, or are very mild, leading the victim to forsake medical care because they may just not think it’s necessary. Third, by the time symptoms even develop, it is usually too late to treat mesothelioma.

Although the cancer can be fought with chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma. Patients may see an improvement in their condition, but there is no way to completely get rid of it.

Fortunately, help is available to mesothelioma victims. Anyone who has been diagnosed with the disease or their loved ones should contact a mesothelioma lawyer immediately. As a victim, you and your loved ones may be entitled to thousands or even millions of dollars in money damages and medical care and your mesothelioma attorney will not rest until you do so.

Mesothelioma lawyers also fight to make sure those responsible for your asbestos exposure are held accountable for their negligence. Rest assured that your paralegal will not allow their actions to go unnoticed. Anyone guilty of exposing someone to asbestos without the proper safety gear or without notifying them of the presence of asbestos is liable to pay hefty fines and damages.

Finding a leading mesothelioma attorney is not easy, but with the help of the internet and sites like this, getting connected to a skilled paralegal is simple. Unfortunately, that convenience has been threatened by the SOPA act, a bill that aims to censor the internet. Millions of sites could be taken down for absolutely no legitimate reason, but you can do something to stand up for your rights to both use the internet and find a mesothelioma lawyer. Petition your state legislature and the federal government to stop SOPA and uphold your freedom to use the internet.

Asbestos Abatement Procedure Complete at Ohio Site

Piketon, Ohio – The asbestos abatement procedure for the X-333 Process Building at the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Portsmouth Site has been completed, giving demolishers the ok to tear down the former gaseous diffusion plant.

The abatement process has been going on since November and is part of the DOE’s decontamination process for all sites that are to be demolished. The Portsmouth Site has been around since 1954, when asbestos was legally used in the United States.

The asbestos in the building was mainly used for insulation. However, before any building can be turned down, asbestos needs to be removed thoroughly or else anyone in the building will be at risk of developing any number of asbestos-related diseases like mesothelioma cancer, a deadly disease that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest.

Mesothelioma affects roughly 3,500 victims a year in the United States alone, but many more cases go unnoticed. The cancer is extremely difficult to both diagnose and treat because it can take up to 50 years to manifest. Usually when it does, symptoms are not severe enough to cause alarm and victims never end up getting the medical help they need.

Although some treatments like chemotherapy, radiation and surgery can help relieve some of the symptoms and possibly help ward off the cancer, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma.

“Protecting the health and safety of the personnel at the plant and in the community, as well as the environment, is the first priority in the clean-up process. Safe asbestos removal like this in the X-333 will be a significant part of the activities to come,” said Vince Adams, DEO site coordinator at Portsmouth.
