Conoco Phillips Corp. appeals asbestos settlement decision

JACKSON — Conoco Phillips Corp. has appealed a jury decision that granted a multi-million dollar settlement to an oil drilling worker who claimed he became ill following asbestos exposure.

The Mississippi Supreme Court will hear Conoco’s arguments on Monday. The company has appealed a jury decision granting $15.2 million to a victim who claimed to have developed asbestosis as a result of working around asbestos.

The victim, Troy Lofton, filed the claims against CP Chem, a division of Conoco Phillips. He was diagnosed with asbestosis in 2004.

Lofton claimed that CP Chem knowingly shipped asbestos-laden products for 20 years that were used in the oil and gas well drilling industry in which he worked. As a result of the exposure to asbestos, Lofton now has to remain on oxygen 24 hours a day.

Conoco denies the claims and has filed an appeal. Arguments are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Jackson.

SEOUL, South Korea – Reports indicate that over 85 percent of Seoul schools contain materials laden with asbestos.

Asbestos has been commonly used in building materials due to its insulating properties, strength and durability. It can be found in drywall, pipes, and flooring and once disturbed, is extremely hazardous to individuals who breathe it in.

Asbestos has been banned from usage in most nations because it contributes to diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare cancer for which there is currently no cure. Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest cavities and although it can take up to 50 years to develop, becomes fatal within just a few months of manifestation.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education found that of 279 facilities in 1,669 kindergarten, elementary, middle and high schools in the city, 87 percent contained asbestos, with a contamination of 24.7 percent of the total surface area. High schools contained the highest amount of the mineral with over 90 percent of facilities built with asbestos-laden materials. Elementary schools were at 86 percent and middle schools at 84 percent.

The majority of asbestos in the high schools was found in insulating materials while the other schools had most of the asbestos localized in the ceiling.

Dangerous asbestos fibers were also discovered in open areas in five facilities. When asbestos is intact, it generally poses no threat. It is when the fibers are broken that they are breathed in and lead to numerous diseases.

“As much as the asbestos within the school can be harmful to the health of students, there have to be safety classes and increased inspection to find solutions to the problem,” said a Seoul education office official.
