PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – While there is currently no cure for mesothelioma cancer, leading technologies and research by one nonprofit organization may have led to the discovery of a possible treatment for the deadly asbestos-related disease.
Researchers at the Wistar Institute, an independent nonprofit biomedical research institute based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, may have discovered a therapeutic target for Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2), an inherited cancer disorder, as well as related cancers, such as mesothelioma.
Merlin, the protein that is encoded within the NF2 gene, has been shown to interact with another protein called angiomotin.
“Angiomotin is required for movement of cells that form new blood vessels, so it is fascinating to see it so closely linked to merlin, the product of the NF2 gene, loss of which leads to tumor formation,” explained Joseph Kissil, Ph.D., senior author of the study and associate professor in the Molecular and Cellular Oncogenesis Program of The Wistar Institute Cancer Center.
According to the researchers, this discovery has provided invaluable information in the fight against mesothelioma cancer and could lead to a revolutionary treatment for the disease.
By starving tumor cells, which is already a strategy that other cancer therapies use, mesothelioma patients could see drastic improvements in their disease.
“What makes angiomotin a tempting target is that it is used by both blood vessels and the growing tumor cells that need the nutrients these blood vessels provide,” explained Kissil.
Merlin is part of a pathway of molecules that signal and regulate cell growth and division. When one protein in the pathway is disrupted, the function of other proteins is disabled. These mutations, especially those with the merlin protein, have been discovered in about half of all mesothelioma cases, as well as with thyroid and bladder cancers.
Mesothelioma patients could be looking at a new treatment to fight the disease in the very near future.
Current treatments for mesothelioma are very expensive. Unfortunately, not all patients can afford to battle their disease, even though mesothelioma is a type of cancer that could have been entirely prevented.
Most patients contract the disease after being exposed to asbestos, usually at work. If you or a loved one have been exposed or have already been diagnosed with mesothelioma, seek the help of a top mesothelioma lawyer immediately for legal assistance.
You may be entitled to millions of dollars in compensation and medical benefits and your mesothelioma attorney will ensure that you obtain it. Your paralegal will investigate the source of your asbestos exposure and if someone is found to have negligently exposed you to the harmful mineral without adequate protection, rest assured that your mesothelioma lawyer will do everything possible to make them pay for their crimes.
