Missoula County applies for asbestos removal grant

Missoula County is trying to apply for a pilot federal grant to help remove asbestos from the annex to the county courthouse.

The abatement could cost over a quarter of a million dollars, but cannot be postponed any longer. The county is planning on renovating the annex this spring but with asbestos still in the building, those plans have to be put on hold.

Asbestos was banned from the United States in the 1980s but used to be a very popular material in construction due to its insulating properties and strength. However, it was prohibited once it was discovered that breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to several illnesses like mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and chest. It can take decades to develop, making both diagnosing and treating it extremely difficult. Although there are treatments for mesothelioma like radiation, chemotherapy and surgery, there is still no cure for the disease.

If asbestos is left in the annex, anyone who comes in contact with the mineral may become infected. Unfortunately, removing asbestos is not cheap.

According to John Adams, grants administrator at the Office of Planning and Grants, the application will be for roughly $280,000.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set aside $5.5 million for Brownfields Multi-Purpose Pilot Grants which cover both asbestos assessment and abatement.

The county is hoping it will get the grant. It has already budgeted $13 million for the entire renovation project, including asbestos abatement.
While there are strict laws regarding asbestos abatement, many companies disregard them and expose their workers to the mineral without the appropriate protective gear.
