Deaths attributed to asbestos-related diseases are rising to unprecedented levels in eastern England. Research from Look East, a branch of the BBC, reported that cases of mesothelioma are rising and expect them to continue to increase over the next few years.
The death rate of mesothelioma between 1982 and 1984 was 14.8 people per million, that rose significantly to 66.2 per million in 2006 to 2008. These rates exceed both Scotland and Wales, and are higher than other regions in Great Britain, according to statistics from Health and Safety Executive.
Mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the lungs, is almost exclusively caused by inhaling asbestos dust. Asbestos was once considered a wonder building material, because of its fire retardant properties.
It was prevalently used in construction of commercial properties, residential buildings and ships. The material has largely been banned in both Great Britain and the United States. In both countries mesothelioma attorneys help the victims of this disease with lawsuits filed against the companies responsible for their exposure.
Mesothelioma is expected to affect a large number of people in Asia where asbestos in not banned. It can take decades for people to show any signs of mesothelioma.
Asbestos caused diseases require costly treatments so those affected find it necessary to employ mesothelioma lawyers in order to obtain compensation needed for their healthcare. Because asbestos is still present in buildings throughout the US and Britain, those afflicted will continue to need retain the services of mesothelioma attorneys for years to come.
